Approved Minutes


Present:  H. Henschel Pellett, M. Rolfes, J. McKinzie, L. Baures, M. Pomije, D. Cronn-Mills

1.    Approval of minutes from 4-27-04. Approved: MSP

2.    UCAP discussed the policy review process, how it impacts on the committee, and the routes available for any questions raised by the committee.

3.    Discussion of proposed policy of priority registration.  This policy is online at: http://www.mnsu.edu/acadaf/pdfs/DraftPriorityRegistrationPolicy.pdf
a.    Concerned about showing any group preferential treatment, especially in high-demand courses
b.    Discussion of the difficulties of being involved in university-sponsored activities and scheduling courses to accommodate involvement in the activity
c.    Discussion that if priority is on academics, then priority registration would allow students to schedule courses to limit absences from classes.
d.    Motion to approve the policy “as is” : MSF
e.    Motion to approve the policy contingent on the following conditions : MSP
i.    Identifying Procedures steps 1 and 2 as criteria for selection of priority registration
ii.    Remove the sentence “This group would include student-athletes, forensics students, theatre students, and music students.” Rationale: No groups should be “grandfathered” into the policy. All groups should have to go through the application process.
iii.    Delete the word “Other” from sentence “Other student groups wishing priority registration ….” Rationale: Meets the expectations established in 3eiii.

4.    Information from FA Executive Committee
a.    FYI: Pomije will  be joining others to draft the language for the Diversity Taskforce
b.    FYI: Differential tuition is under discussion and review (this is a continuing discussion from last year).
i.    UCAP reinforces its position established during 2003-04: differential tuition does not fall under the purview of the UCAP charge.

5.    deadlines & dates
a.    FYI: Curriculum Proposal Submission Deadlines for 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 were distributed to chairs, dean, and program coordinators

6.    Other
a.    UCAP will meet with HLC from 9:00 – 9:45 on Thursday, September 16 in CSU 254
b.    Marie reported the representative from College and Social and Behavioral Sciences is Ron Schirmer
c.    Online Faculty Readiness Checklist was discussed.
i.    UCAP reinforces its position established during 2003-04: Online Faculty Readiness does not fall under the purview of the UCAP charge.
d.    d. UCAP advises that Administrative sub-meet will not occur on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 due to lack of agenda items.

7.    Next Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 21, 2004, 3-5 p.m. in MH 215
