MAGS
McMillan reported that the following five theses had been submitted as nominees for review for the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools 2005 Distinguished Thesis competition:

Ishrat Kamal, Attitudes and Beliefs of Correction Personnel Regarding Intervention and Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections Among the Incarcerated Population in the County Jails of Southern Minnesota:  Department of Health Science, College of Allied Health and Nursing, Advisor, Judith Luebke.

Carol Snell-Feikema, The Process of Concientización in Isabel Allende’s De Amor y De Sombra:  Department of Modern Languages, College of Arts and Humanities, Advisor, Kimberly Contag.

Kathryn Keller, Little Laos on the Prairie: A Rural School District’s Response to Lao Immigrant Families:  Department of Educational Studies:  K-12 & Secondary Programs, College of Education, Advisor, Scott Page.

Erin Louise Seldat, From the Grassroots to the Green Institute: Community Organization in the Phillips Community of South Minneapolis, Minnesota:  Department of Sociology and Corrections, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Advisor, Steve Buechler.

The Committee recommended submission of Nataliya Kovalchuk’s thesis to MAGS.  The College of Graduate Studies and Research will notify and congratulate all nominees by letter as well as publicize a notice in campus publications.  As has been done in previous years, a luncheon will be held in the spring to recognize and honor the nominees.  The annual meeting for MAGS will be held March 29-April 1, 2005 in Kansas City.

Curriculum Proposals
The following curriculum proposals were approved:
Proposal 004, HIST 536 (4) History of East Asian Relations with the United States   New Course
Proposal 005, HP 649 (3)  Sport in American Culture  New Course
Proposal 006, WOST 565 (1) Women and Spirituality  Course Withdrawal

Continuing Registration Fees
Delgado distributed handouts on continuing registration fees and re-admission fees that were gathered from various institutions.  The Committee agreed with the concept of both fees.  It was felt that students would be easier to track as well as having students registered for credit for the campus services that they were using.

Graduate Assistantship Stipends
The Committee felt strongly that Minnesota State University, Mankato needs to stay within the range of what other MnSCU institutions are doing.  Delgado indicated that he was trying to get the actual number of assistantships on campus but has yet to
receive them.  He suggested looking at reorganizing the current resources as well as redefining the classification of Graduate Assistant to possibly Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, and Professional Graduate Intern.  In all instances, the key element is to tie the assistantship back to the program.

Vision Statement
The Committee discussed at length the Draft Vision Statement that had been prepared during the 2003-2004 academic year.  The Committee felt the need to change the multiple responsible to group to one group thereby allowing for more accountability.  Delgado indicated that the office is currently working with Ann Fee on a research publication.  Discussion continued on Goal 4 with a possible Graduate Research Conference.  It was suggested that recognition could be done at the Departmental and/or College level.  Delgado also indicated that a graduate student journal might be a better outlet for students and used the journal produced by SIU-Carbondale as an example.

Dean’s Issues
Delgado briefly indicated that Community of Science has been ordered for the campus.  A memo has been sent to Chairs, Program Coordinators, and Deans with sessions being organized by the Research and Sponsored Program staff.

The meeting was adjourned.
