General Education Sub Meet & Confer Notes

Thursday, October 2, 2003

Present:  Ron Nickerson, Co-Chair, Warren Sandmann, Co-Chair, Jim Rife, Johnson Afolayan, Dick Liebendorfer, Kaye Herth, Gretta Handke, Kellian Clink, amanuensis.

I. Introductions were made around the table.

II. We reviewed the curricular Flow Chart.  Warren Sandmann reminded us to study the forms and suggest improvements for next year.  Ron Nickerson asked committee members to ask their college curriculum committees for advice on improving the forms.

III. We discussed progress of GECCIGs.  GECCIG 7 is doing a final revision, GECCIG 5 is almost complete, Dick will complete GECCIG 6, without the data from one department, which doesn't seem to be forthcoming.

IV. We discussed communication about the wisdom garnered from the GECCIG reporting process.  It is in a multitude of formats.  First, the reports are available from the Academic Affairs Webpage or go directly to: http://www.mnsu.edu/acadaf/html/GEAssessHome.htm  Next, we shared the reports already completed at the Dean's Meeting last year and anticipate doing so this year with those from categories 5, 6 and 7 when they are completed.  Last, we are hoping the meeting we are hosting in Armstrong Hall on November 14 at 1 pm is doing the best kind of communication, where people who have, will, or are interested in teaching classes in those categories will come to exchange ideas.  We considered having a Reporter article written about Gen Ed assessment activities.

We will invite Tracy Pellett to attend Gen Ed meetings when assessment is an agenda item to give us ideas about assessment and improving the campus climate for assessment.

V. We discussed anecdotal evidence that some general education classes are no longer being taught that way.  We are going to think of mechanisms to remind faculty of the importance of incorporating the general education goals and objectives in the courses taught within the respective General Education categories. We don't want to be the policing faction, but an educating, encouraging faction that periodically reminds faculty of the overall goals of the general education program.
