General Education Sub Meet & Confer
Notes
12/4/03


Present: Jim Rife, Gretta Handke, Ron Nickerson, Warren Sandmann, Kaye Herth, John Frey, Dick Liebendorfer, Johnson Afolayan, Kellian Clink, scribe.

1.    We discussed and came to consensus on a response to the Speech Communication request for an exception to the 2-course limit for General Education. Because it would be not serve the General Education philosophy of having students explore many different disciplines in their general education program, the request was denied.  A formal response to the department outlining the rationale for the decision will be sent to the department by the Sub-Meet.

2.    We discussed the General Education Workshop on Writing Intensive.  We agreed that it was a good discussion, overall, and a model we will use for some subsequent categories that reach across colleges.  We are encouraging Deans to set up meetings for teachers of Categories that are largely housed within an individual college.  Dr. Kaye Herth and Dr. John Frey will take this idea back to their colleagues.

    Warren Sandmann shared some exciting developments that will address some of the issues discussed in the Writing Intensive Workshop.  The English Department is piloting an online writing skills program, and the Center for Academic Success is looking into other ways to assist students who request assistance with writing.

3.    The Faculty Coordinator for Academic Assessment, Tracy Pellett, still does not have reports from Categories 5, 6, and 7.  Hopefully, those responsible will get them completed over the break and the General Education Sub Meet can review them next semester and report back to the campus community on their findings.

    Right now, the data collection is in the process of being completed for Categories 8, 9, and 10. Warren Sandmann and Dick Liebendorfer offered to meet with these GECCIGS to assist them.

4.    We will encourage CETL to help work with new faculty to help them understand the goals of General Education.
