General Education
April 20, 2005
Approved Minutes

Present: Jim Rife, Dick Liebendorfer, Ron Nickerson, Chair, and Johnson Afolayan

1)    We discussed the revisions to the Anthropology 280 course proposal previously tabled because it did not clearly indicate how the course met the category objectives for categories 7 (Human Diversity) and 9 (Ethical and Civic Responsibility).  Members felt that the revisions addressed our previous concerns.  Johnson Afolayan moved that we recommend the proposals for approval.  Jim Rife seconded.  Motion passed..

2)    Members present also unanimously voted to re-elect Ron Nickerson committee chair for the 2005-2006 school year..

3)    We discussed the proposed response to the university’s Human Diversity Commission’s request for an assessment of our efforts to achieve the General Education Outcomes identified in the university’s Diversity Plan that Warren Sandmann drafted for our consideration.  Members were comfortable with Warren’s language and suggested that he forward it to the Diversity Commission.

4)    We discussed four course proposals (three from Political Science and one from Sociology) to withdraw courses from the university curriculum.  Members felt that because these courses were being withdrawn from the university curriculum they would also be de facto withdrawn from the General Education curriculum once UCAP acted on the proposals.  As a result, we felt we did not need  to take an action on the proposals.

Respectfully submitted,

Ron Nickerson
