Present: Jim Rife, Dick Liebendorfer, Ron Nickerson, Chair, and Johnson
Afolayan
1) We reviewed a student appeal to substitute EET 125
for Humanities 250 in Category 6 (Humanities and the Arts). The
student in question had been advised by student counseling staff in the
College of Science, Engineering and Technology that such a substitution
was essentially an automatic substitution. Unfortunately, that is
not necessarily the case. The committee felt that since the
student was given poor advice by a university staff member in a
position to render advice, that the student should not be penalized in
this case. However, this is a non-precedent setting
recommendation applied to this case only. The committee further
recommends that if the college wishes to continue using EET 125 as a
substitute for courses in category 6, that the department in question
should submit a course proposal to have EET 125 added to the General
Education Curriculum.
2) We discussed the follow-up information
received from the Department of Military Sciences regarding their
proposal to add MIL 252 to Category 5 (History and Social and
Behavioral Sciences). Members were generally pleased that the
department had addressed our previous concerns over how the course
content related to the desired learning outcomes for the
category. However, we re-tabled the proposal pending feedback
from Gretta Handke because the course in question is a military history
course.
3) We reviewed proposal number 140 from the
Department of Biological Sciences to withdraw Biol 201 from categories
8 (Global Perspective) and 10 (People and the Environment). Dick
Liebendorfer moved acceptance of the proposal. Johnson Afolayan
seconded the motion. Motion carried.
4) The committee discussed proposal number 145 from
the Department of Chemistry and Geology to create a new Gen Ed Course
titled Science of Sport (CHEM 135) for inclusion in Category 5 (Natural
Science). The course rationale indicates that this course will
also be identified as HP 135 by the Human Performance Department and
have dual listing in the university bulletin. The committee
tabled the request pending consultation with the Office of Academic
Affairs to determine whether or not a companion proposal should be
submitted from the Department of Human Performance for HP 135 since the
two departments are in two different colleges. Ron will follow-up
with Warren Sandmann and the Department of Human Performance.
Respectfully submitted,
Ron Nickerson
